Brief Description: Correspondence of the Buildings and Equipment Section contains Committee on Library Architecture and Building Planning (1906-08), the Committee on Library Equipment and Appliances (1953-54) and the Committee on Insurance for Libraries (1951-52), minutes of the Building Committee (1942, 1950) and of the Equipment Committee (1954-55), annual reports of the Building Committee (1948-50) and the Equipment Committee (1953-54) and correspondence regarding the ALA archives (1942-46), includes library building consultants, mobile service outlets, functions of the committees and membership. Annual reports focus on new developments in lighting, cost considerations, manufacturers' buying guides, book shelving and filing equipment. Note: the 1906-1909 correspondence of John Thomson, member of the Committee on Library Architecture relates to the collection and control of library plans and photographs at ALA Headquarters, conference exhibits and committee meetings.

Biographical Note for Buildings and Equipment Section (LAMA) :

The Buildings and Equipment Section is one of seven sections within the Library Administration and Management Association and has been a part of the Division since 1975 (1). Prior to 1957 each of the ALA divisions maintained separate building committees. Chairpersons of the division-level building committees belonged to the ALA Building Committee (so named on February 1, 1952) that was designated the Library Architecture and Building Planning Committee upon its creation in 1932 by the Council (2). The Building and Equipment Section Exercises responsibility for all matters pertaining to aspects of library architecture, including interior design, site selection, building maintenance, plumbing, and planning (3). The Section currently consists of ten Committees and one Discussion Group (4).
