Description: Papers relating to the expulsion of students in January, 1897 as the result of a riot connected with the interruption of the Dec. 21, 1896, Freshman Class social. Papers include letters to President Draper from expelled students, parents and interested persons, including Gov. John P. Altgeld (Feb. 11, 1897), seeking reconsideration or help in admission to other universities; and testimonials signed by members of the Freshman Class condemning the violation of University rules and declaring their intention to observe those rules in the future. Papers also include a Senior Class resolution condemning the disorder and statements by freshmen who refused to sign the testimonial.
