Description: Military Department History includes a reprinted leaflet of correspondence between General I. N. Haynie and Professor J. B. Turner regarding military education in state colleges (1865) and a paper entitled "History of Military Department, University of Illinois, 1868-1921" (1921) by Captain Edward S. Johnston concerning military department origin, development, enlisted men, personnel, Colonel Fechet and other commandants, World War I and its impact on the department, President Edmund James' plans to improve the military department, the YMCA, and the ROTC. The essay also contains incomplete appendices which include a chronology of the Military Department and a list of the department's distinguished graduates.
