Description: Papers of Robert Mize Sutton (1916- ), professor of history (1948-1984), Assistant Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (1956-1958), Associate Dean of the Graduate College (1958-1966), Chairman of the Department of History (1972-1974), President of the Illinois State Historical Society (1962-1963), and Director of the Illinois Historical Survey (1965-1984), include biographical essays and photos; personal and professional correspondence (1951-1997), including correspondence relating to his membership in the American Historical Association, Phi Kappa Phi, the Conference and Faith Society, the Illinois Historical Society, and other organizations; graduate student files with letters of recommendation, thesis proposals and other documents relating to his position as advisor, member of dissertation committees, and examiner; faculty files, including correspondence over collaborative scholarly projects and recommendations for promotions; class syllabi, lecture notes, and exams for history courses; publications and manuscripts, including book reviews and correspondence regarding editorial assignments, mostly concerning ninteenth century American history, Illinois state history, the development of midwestern transportation, and the special role of the Illinois Central Railroad in the Civil War.
