In 1913, Charles Robinson, the first Professor of Civic Design, began to offer courses in Civic Design in the Department of Horticulture.
Established in 1934, the Bureau of Community Planning was a research and extension unit in the area of municipal planning.

The 1954 issue was prepared and distributed by the Department of City and Regional Planning of the University of California, Berkeley. From 1956 to 1961, the Department of City Planning and Landscape Architecture issued the Digest. Indices are published separately for 1961 and 1962.
