Historical Note:

This program was established in 1970, as a committee of the Graduate College1 in response to a proposal by Robert D. Katz, Professor of Architecture. The purpose of this committee is to establish a program to bring the quantity and quality of housing within the framework of research, teaching and public service, and to emphasize the housing needs of families of low and moderate income.2

Katz, Professor of Architecture and Director of the Office of Housing Research and Development (1969- 1994), including correspondece, grant proposals, grant reports (including 'Alternative Home-Ownership for Older Persons', 'Housing Alternatives for Elderly Homeowners,' and 'Retirement Housing in Illinois: A Profile and Description of Quality Assurance Procedures' and working papers concering research projects managed by Katz and other faculty members in the Office. Signficant subjects include elderly housing, public housing in Illinois, University of Illinois housing, and HR & D unit history. Correspondents include the National Endowment for the Humanities, United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), the Ford Foundation, the Illinios Housing Development Authority, and Mary Nenno. This series also includes a projects file containing correspondence and reports with many public housing authorties on non-governmental organizations in the state of Illinois.
