Established in 1957 as the Central Office on the Use of Space, and responsible at that time to the Executive Vice-President and Provost, the Office of Space Utilization received its present name December 1, 1967.
The Director of the Office of Space Utilization is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In practice, the Office of Space Utilization is closely associated with both the Vice-Chancellor for Administrative Affairs and the Vice-Chancellor for Campus Affairs. The Director oversees the total operation of the Office which includes: the Space Inventory and Remodeling Section; the Space Planning and Projection Section; the Timetable Section; and the Reservation Section.

Chronological and alphabetical
Prairie State Games planning files of Mark Netter concerning the University of Illinois' role in hosting the Prairie State Games, (1984-1992) includes correspondence, memos, Steering Committee minutes and agendas, budgets, invoices, financial statements, newspaper clippings, publicity, and publications concerning arrangements to conduct and host the games, sports included, support services for games, site selection, legislation, and management audit and review concerning the termination of the games. This series also includes material relating to initial planning for the event, including staff visits to other state games, and staff participation in National Symposia on State Games (1985-91).
