Scope and Contents

Records of the Committee for the Study of Individual Freedom include agenda, minutes, annual and financial reports, announcements of meeting and lectures, press releases, drafts of research proposals, news clippings, photographs and correspondence concerning administrative relations with the Department of Economics, College of Commerce and Graduate College, graduate fellowships, speakers and research projects sponsored by the Committee; grants from Lilly Endowment, Lincoln Educational, and Relm Foundations. The Committee sponsored speakers and research projects relating to individual freedom including personal freedom and economic organization; business organization; lend-lease to Russia during World War II; post-World War II occupation of Austria; Federal Trade Commission; regulatory policy; colonial wine trade; and the gold standard. Speakers and researchers include: Russell Kirk, Melchior Payli, Henry Hazlitt, Yale Brozen, Fritz Machlup, George Stigler, G. Cullom Davis, Robert Severson, David Mishkin, Robert K. Jones, Robert Golembiewski, Harold F. Breimyer, Edgar L. Erickson, and Donald Whitnah. This series includes correspondence of Donald L. Kemmerer, chair, with committee members Edgar Erickson, Robert W. Mayer, Francis Wilson, Harold L. Halcrow, Joseph A. Russell, and Russell Sullivan and with university administrators including John F. Due (Chairman, Economics Department), Deans Paul Green (Commerce) and Frederick T. Wall (Graduate) and Provost Lyle Lanier and with student groups including the Conservative Coordinating Council and the Daily Illini.
