The 1867 Catalogue of the Illinois Industrial University listed Mechanical Science and Art in the Polytechnic Department.
On September 1, 1940, the Department of Railway Engineering was discontinued and some of its courses and faculty were transferred to the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Reports include research on fluid flow (AF 18 (600)-392), the mechanism of tool wear (U.S. Army, Contract DA-11-022-ORD-1980) and a survey of coal-related research (1974).
