Records of Kaufman's Inc., clothing firm of Champaign, Illinois (formerly Ottenheimer Brothers (1877-1910) and J.M. Kaufman and Company (1910-29)) and records of the partnership of Schumaker and Kaufman and Kaufman's Inc. and affiliated stores in Decatur, Danville, Rantoul, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin, contain legal and incorporation documents, minutes of the director's board, captial stock books; department records and sales reports; correspondence with manufacturers, suppliers, employees, and customer concerning orders, credit, collection attempts, appraisals, advertising, audits, leased departments, and legal actions; photographs of the store (ca. 1879-1911), sample advertising (1899), and corporate seals; financial records for Ottenheimer's, Kaufman's, Reddick and Bradley, and Schumaker and Kaufman, including departmental and store sales reports (1902-48), debits and credits (1925-45), profits and loss statements (1925-47), income and sales tax records (1911-46), group and accident insurance, and check register receipts (1913-49); and Kaufman Family Financial records, including personal bills (1929-50), real estate holdings in Champaign and Clinton, Illinois, individual income tax statements, and records from the Kaufmans' 1931 federal income tax case. Related records of the Hart Mirror Plate Glass Company, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, owned by Josephine Hart Kaufman and administered by Stanley Kaufman are held in Record Series 9/50/27 and the personal paper of UI alumnus Stanely Kaufman are in Record Series 26/20/35.
