Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Papers of Stuart Umpleby, graduate research assistant in the Computer-based Education Research Laboratory, include PLATO-produced transcripts of electronic discussions concerning the impeachment of Richard Nixon, other local and national events, and the use of PLATO to discuss political issues; correspondence with Eleanor Blum; and photocopied articles (mainly from the journal Computers and Automation) concerning the use of computer networks to discuss political and social affairs, and media coverage of government-issued information, including the report of the Warren Commission. This series also includes materials on the American Society for Cybernetics concerning articles of incorporation, a bibliography on cybernetics and systems theory, by-laws, declaration of the ASC, "A Ten Year History of the ASC," "How the Society was Founded," "A Group Project to Assist the ASC," and materials related to membership, publications, conferences, and related organizations.
