Historical Note:

Theodore "Ted" L. Brown (1928- ) is professor emeritus of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois. Brown received his PhD in 1956 from University of Michigan. Shortly after receiving his degree, he became a faculty member at Illinois. He served as Vice Chancellor and then Dean of the Graduate College between 1980 and 1987. In 1987, he became the first director of the Arnold O. and Mabel Beckman Institute. Brown was instrumental in the formation of the interdisciplinary institute and served as the director until 1993. In 1994, he retired from the Beckman Institute and became emeritus.

Brown's research interests lie in the philosophy and social impact of scientific enterprise and thought. He is the author of Making Truth: The Metaphor in Science and Bridging Divides, both published by the University of Illinois Press.
