Historical Note:

<p class='main'>In 1901, the University established positions of superintendents of Buildings, Grounds and Utilities.<a href='#ftn1'><sup>1</sup></a> In 1907 the office of Supervising Architect was created, the person appointed to be responsible for all the University buildings and to report to the president.<a href='#ftn2'><sup>2</sup></a> The Department of Buildings and Grounds was placed under the direction of the Supervising Architect in July 1912.<a href='#ftn3'><sup>3</sup></a> On May 22, 1934 the Supervising Architect's Office became the Physical Plant Department.<a href='#ftn4'><sup>4</sup></a> In 1967, the Director was made University Director of Physical Plant Planning and Construction.<a href='#ftn5'><sup>5</sup></a> In September 1972, the office was renamed the University Office of Capital Programs, the Director reporting to the Vice-President of Financial Affairs.<a href='#ftn6'><sup>6</sup></a> The title of the vice-presidency was changed to Planning and Allocation in 1974<a href='#ftn7'><sup>7</sup></a> and to Administration in 1975.<a href='#ftn8'><sup>8</sup></a> The Capital Programs Office became part of the University Office for Planning in 1976.<a href='#ftn9'><sup>9</sup></a> In 1980 the title of the vice-president was changed again, to Executive Vice-President.<a href='#ftn10'><sup>10</sup></a> The University Office of Planning has four sections dealing with Capital Program, Long-Range Planning and Economic Analyses, Planning and Budgeting, and Resource Analysis and Institutional Research.<a href='#ftn11'><sup>11</sup></a></p>
