Description:

Caption on back:  At the University of Illinois military training is one of the required courses, two years in length.  Classes are called twice a week for a period of about an hour and a half.  Students furnish their own uniforms;  the equipment consisting of rifle, belt, and bayonet, is furnished by the government. Many students who had received military training in the University were selected at the outbreak of the was as student officers and given special training for three months at Fort Sheridan, 27 miles north of Chicago, and at other officers' training camps. They were then sent in September, 1917, to the cantonments to train the soldiers of the National Army. Camp Grant at Rockford is one of the cantonments.
