Description: Universal Serials and Book Exchange Archives contain minutes, agendas, agenda items, annual and quarterly reports and audit reports for USBE Board and Member meetings, correspondence, memoranda, newsletters and publications, and photographs concerning administration of USBE operations, policy, automation of USBE operations, relations to library professional organizations and institutions, national and USBE committees, USBE Newsletter and USBE/News, lists of materials available for purchase, membership lists, administrative and personnel policy, service to foreign libraries, marketing and publicity, and USBE relations with Library of Congress, National Periodical Center (1974-79), Council of National Library Associations (1961-77), National Commission on Libraries (1972-79), the Ford Foundation (1952-79), and the Rockefeller Foundation (1948-65). This series includes correspondence of Alice Ball (Executive Director 1948-83), Juanita Doares (President 1983), Mary Ghikas (Executive Director 1984-86) and Claude Hooker (Managing Director 1986-89).
The USBE (1948-89) was an international non-profit center, located in Washington, D.C. Member libraries could deposit surplus material and purchase material deposit by other USBE members.
