Historical Note: F. William Summers graduated from Florida State University in 1955 with B.A. in librarianship. He earned an MLS in 1959 and doctorate in 1973, both from Rutgers University. Notably in his career, he was head of the Florida State Library for five years. He was assistant dean of the library school at the University of South Carolina from 1971 to 1976 and then dean from 1976 to 1985 [1]. He joined the School of Information at Florida State University as its 3rd dean in the spring of 1985 [2]. Prior to his term as ALA president from 1988 to 1989, he served on its Executive Board from 1982 to 1986 and on its Council for two four-year terms. He was chair of the ALA Committee on Accreditation from 1970 to 1974 and the Committee on Program Evaluation and Support (COPES) from 1978 to 1982. Also, he was president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education in 1981 [1].
