Historical Note: Beverly P. Lynch was born on December 27, 1936 [1]. She earned a B.S. and a Litt.D. from North Dakota State University, an M.S. from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison [2]. She was the University Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1977 to 1989 before becoming dean of the University of California Los Angeles's (UCLA) School of Library and Information Science. She is a founding director of the California Rare Book School [3]. She is currently the director of the Senior Fellows Program at UCLA and a professor in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies [2]. In 1972, Lynch was appointed Executive Secretary of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). She was President of ALA from 1985 to 1986. In addition, she has been involved in ALA Council, the Committee on Accreditation, the Budget and Finance Committee, and has chaired the International Relations Committee. She is a founder of the U.S.-China Librarians' conference series. In 2009, she received ALA's Joseph W. Lippincott award, and in 2012, she received the Melvil Dewey Medal Award [3].
