National Farm-City Week was founded in conjunction with Kiwanis International, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children. Kiwanis International Board served as the coordinating agency for the National Farm-City Committee from 1955-1988. The purpose of this week is to connect the nation's rural and urban people through educating youth and adults about the interdependence of agriculture and industry. This week originated in 1955 during a period of time when farmers faced financial difficulties and a poor public perception. The annual designated National Farm-City Week starts the Friday before Thanksgiving and ends on Thanksgiving Day.
