On 15 February 1855, Illinois legislature set up an elaborate education organization under the direction of a Superintendent of Public Instruction located in Springfield, Illinois. A building was built in 1867 and the the first tax supported school in Edwards County District 1. Records of School District #1 (Albion, Edwards County, Illinois) contains a ledger volume containing detailed board minutes (1859-60), accounts of finances includes lists of tuition, monies paid out by treasurer, and a record of teachers who taught at school.
