The first Illinois State Geological Survey lasted from 1851 to 1875. In 1893, the Governor, in a message to the Legislature, recommended that the State Geological Department be placed in charge of the University and that all of its collections be moved to Urbana. The recommendation was approved by the University's Board of Trustees.
