Historical Note:

Special education was informally administered in the College of Education until October 1962, when the Department of Special Education was established.1

Precise Early Education of Children with Handicaps (PEECH) Project:

The project was established in 1970 as a model program for the early education of the multiple-handicapped. It is a INT project of the Department of Special Education, Urbana Community School District 116 and the Illinois Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.2

2. Office of Professor Merle B. Karnes. Contract signed 1970 with Bureau of Ed. Handicapped, IL Office of Sup. of Pub. Instruction. Funding started 7/1/70, classroom work, 8/70. Contract ran for three years as a classroom demonstration project. Subsequent contract for dissemination project, through 1975.

Scope and Contents

Records of the Great Lakes Quality Improvement Center for Disabilities include state agreements brochures, a CD-ROM, reports, evaluations, training manuals, videotapes and a board game used at teacher in-service programs and other training sessions sponsored by the Center; contain information concerning educational programs, techniques, and intervention stragegies for disabled/special needs students and the implementation of Head Start.
