Historical Note:

In 1937, the Faculty Senate approved a Code on Student Affairs, which stated that the Committee on Student Affairs would handle discipline.1 Faculty chairmen carried this responsibility until 1948 when the Office of Security was established.2 Working under authority of the Dean of Students Office, it was the duty of the agency "to help students in their relationships with disciplinary agencies within the University and law enforcement agencies outside the University. Members of the office staff interpret University regulations for students and refer them to appropriate agencies for advice and aid."3

On March 9, 1897, the Board of Trustees authorized employment of a policeman.4
