The first students to do graduate work enrolled in 1877, leading to the awarding of the first master's degree in 1878.
In 1974, the Board of Trustees added the title of Vice Chancellor for Research to Dean of the Graduate College to more accurately describe the responsibilities vested in the college.

Administrative subject files for the Program for the Study of Cultural Values and Ethics (1989-1997), including administrative correspondence, annual reports, program proposals and initiatives, committee minutes, and topical files for the institutes, panels, groups, and conferences held each year by the Program. Papers and recordings for the conferences, such as "Changing Cultural Values and the Role of the University" (1991), the "Cultural Plurality Conference" (1992), "Nationalism Conference" (1994), and the University and Planet Earth Discussion Series, are also included. The Program was initiated in 1989 to further the cross-disciplinary discussion and study of cultural and ethical issues at the University of Illinois campus. It included a fellowship program, special interest groups, panels series, and conferences. The Director was Dr. Walter Feinberg.
