Name: Howenstein, Marshall (1901-2001)

Historical Note: Marshall Howenstein (1901-2001) was a lifelong music educator in Indiana. Hownstein first taught in Frankfort, Indiana from 1931 until 1935. During his time in Frankfort, he shared a room with Maud Powell's cousin Miss Mabel Love, who taught piano in the town of Frankfort. While living with Miss Love, Howenstein collected several items belonging to Maud Powell and later wrote an article about Powell in the Journal of the American String Teachers Association. He became the director of the West Lafayette high school band and orchestra in 1935, following the establishment of the band in 1934. He taught at West Lafayette until his retirement in 1965. During his time as band and orchestra director he became a member of the American String Teachers Association, rising to become Indiana's state president of the organisation.
