Caption on back: "The three millionth volume for the University of Illinois library is added to the card catalog listing by Miss Marian Harman (right) catalog librarian, while Director Robert B. Downs of the University Library and Miss Helen M. Welch, acquisitions librarian, examine the book itself. It is a rare volume, printed in 1498, and the first geographical work to mention the discovery of a new world. Only five copies of this book are in America, and none other in the Midwest. The next mention of the discovery was in a 1507 book which first applied the name 'America.' Illinois also has an edition of this book. The University's library in addition to its 3,000,000 volumes has nearly another million other items in its collections. It ranks first among state university libraries, third among all universities and fifth among all U.S. libraries."
