Scope and Contents of the Materials

This item (2 pages) contains English-language translations from a critical essay on French author Claude-Henri Watelet (1718-1786) and from Watelet's L'Art de peindre (1760) by William Hogarth (1697-1764). The original texts appear in the Amsterdam edition of L'Art de peindre in 1761. The origin of the manuscripts was identified by University of Illinois Professor John A. Dussinger in 1984.

Collection Historical Note

William Hogarth (1697-1764), a native of London, was a silversmith and engraver prior to becoming a painter. He created satirical, moral, and Biblical scenes as well as portraits, and became sergeant-painter to King George II in 1757.
