Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains a two-volume manuscript draft (500 pages) of The Alhambra: A Series of Tales and Sketches of the Moors and Spaniards, authored by Washington Irving (1783-1859) between 1829 and 1832. It includes passages in both Irving's and an unidentified copyist's hands, as well as the author's annotations and alterations. The text is similar, but not identical, to the text of the first published U.S. edition (Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832).

Volume 1 contains pages 1-276 and volume 2 contains pages 277-500.
