Oral Histories of World War II at the University of Illinois

The Daily Illini Editorial Staff, circa 1944

In 2008, Chris D'Arpa of the Student Life and Culture Archival Program conducted interviews (transcribed by undergraduate Dan Raymond) which focused on preserving the recollections of students who attended the University of Illinois during World War II. The oral histories focus on: military training for on campus, the increased prominence of women during the war effort, the personal experiences of enlisted U of I students, race relations on a segregated campus, and memories of how national events, such as the Pearl Harbor, D-Day and the death of FDR, were received by the student body.
