Champaign County Historical Archives
at the Urbana Free Library

Holdings include many resources useful to researchers of the Urbana-Champaign music community, including sound recordings, newspaper clippings, regional publications, oral histories, and personal papers, many of them indexed by subject in their online database.  Of particular interest are well-indexed collections of the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette and the Psychedelic Boneyard, searchable by music genre and artist name.

Jazz Threads website

A joint project of 40 North and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Jazz Threads assembled documentation of the local jazz scene during 2002-2004, including material on artists and ensembles past and present.  The website provides perpetual access to this content, through oral history interviews, photographs, and an extensive list of local music venues.

Nature’s Table website

A site maintained by cujazz.org, documenting the Nature’s Table restaurant and music venue located in Urbana, Illinois from 1979-1991.  The site includes a menu, recipes, stories and interviews, and an extensive chronology of performances at the restaurant.  Sound recordings of some performances are available at naturestable.net.

A collection of correspondence, ephemera, sound recordings, publications, and other materials documenting the life, career, and legacy of Josh Gottheil as a drummer and promoter in Urbana-Champaign.

Volume at Denver Public Library

This service allows Denver Public Library card holders to download and stream music from the library’s collection of Colorado bands and musicians.

Iowa City Public Library Local Music Project

The Iowa City Public Library licenses music from musicians in Johnson County, Iowa, and makes it available for their patrons to download.

Yahara Music Library at Madison Public Library

Streaming and download service for library cardholders featuring music from Madison, Wisconsin.  Artist and album pages feature reviews, biographies, and information about upcoming shows, links to the musicians’ websites, social media, and online stores.  Technical elements of the Yahara Music Library have been released under an open source license.
