2017 Sweetcorn Festival “One Community Together” Programming Kicks off August 26th

The Sousa Archives and Center for American Music is working again with the Urbana Business Association, University of Illinois, Champaign County Museums Network, and the Urbana and Champaign High School Marching Bands to lead the music and children’s programming on the One Community Together (OCT) stage for the 2017 Urbana Sweet Corn Festival that is scheduled for August 25th and 26th.  This year’s OCT programming takes place on Saturday the 26th, and highlights many of our community’s special collections and museums as well as our wonderfully talented local musicians, dance artists, and three outstanding high school marching bands.  A complete listing of OCT performances and children’s activities is listed below.  For further information about the One Community Together programming contact the Sousa Archives at either 217-333-4577 or email schwrtzs@illinois.edu.  For the festival’s other exciting music programs please visit the Sweet Corn Festival Facebook page.

OCT Music Programming (August 26th)

11:30-12:00 – Cuperstars

12:15-1:15 – BBL Fine Arts Jazz Ensemble and Bow-dacious String Band

1:30-2:15  – Ipan Steel Drum Ensemble

2:15-3:15  – Young and Fretless [wandering the Festival grounds]

2:30-3:15  – Bali Lantari

3:15-3:45  – Young and Fretless [playing in front of OCT Stage]

4:00-4:45 – Traditional Jazz Orchestra

5:00-6:00  – Urbana, Central, and Centennial Marching Bands

6:00-6:15 – University of Illinois Chancellor and the Urbana and Champaign mayors thank the OCT music ensembles, and then the 3 high school marching bands play together Erick Leidzen’s arrangement of “God Bless America.”

11:30-4:30 – Instrument Petting Zoo (sponsored by the Sousa Archives at the OCT stage)

11:30-1:00 – Natures Table (sponsored by the Anita Purves Center at the children’s zone)

11:30-1:00 – Experiencing Touchable Nature (sponsored by the Homer Lake Interpretative Center at the children’s zone)

1:00-4:00   – Solar Telescopes and Eclipses (sponsored by the Staerkel Planetarium at the children’s zone)

1:00-3:00   – Children’s Games of the 19th Century Prairie (sponsored by the Museum of the Grand Prairie at the children’s zone)

1:30-3:30   – Make Your Crown (sponsored by the Spurlock Museum at the children’ zone)

2:00-4:00   – Didjerido Instrument Making (sponsored by the Sousa Archives at the OCT stage)
