Despite the progress made controlling tuberculosis in the early 20th century, it was still the leading cause of death of adolescents and young adults through the 1930s. J. Howard Beard came to the University of Illinois in 1912 as Instructor of Physiology upon graduating from Johns Hopkins University College of Medicine.
